We might call this an imagery
problem without necessarily
implying anything about the
nature of imagery. Most people
are very poor at evoking images,
at least images clear enough to
permit a good representational
drawing to be made from them.
Often, even those who can
make faithful copies of models,
still-lifes, or landscapes
cannot render the same
subjects faithfully from
memory. Why some artists have
this additional gift is still a
mystery.
Given this difficulty, it is
probable that certain
internalized schemasΓÇöΓÇô
representations of objects,
events, or processesΓÇöΓÇôthat we
possess guide us in drawing and
lead to certain errors. An
interesting example is the case
of the human face. The reader
is invited to make a quick
sketch of a face without
looking at one. A very common
error is to draw the eyes much
too high in the head. In fact,
the eyes are much closer to the
middle of the head. Since the
error is widespread among
those untrained in drawing, it
is plausible to suppose that it is
based on a mental schema of
faces that is simply incorrectΓÇöΓÇô
for example, "eyes are near the
top of the face, right below the
forehead."
